Heip Hill, Hawick Mushroom walk
6.25 miles Grade 3

Fourteen of us set off on a chilly morning that quickly became a very comfortable temperature for walking and gave us superb views over Hawick and Teviotdale. Leaving the town, we arrived at fields which were possibly the highlight of the day - a myriad mushrooms, a veritable feast of fungi! Suffice to say that some ramblers ended the day with backpacks heavier than they had been at the start. Carlisle will be alive with the sound of sizzling......
Other highlights included walking within inches of a totally uninterested bull and having lunch accompanied by large numbers of swallows and martins filling themselves with food in preparation for their long flight south.

Cautley Spout and The Calf

Ten walkers set off to follow the river bank from Sedbergh for about four miles to reach the incline to Cautley Spout. En route we found a distressed sheep with one horn caught in a wire fence. Some members eventually managed to set it free. We took our banana break at the bottom of Cautley Spout and our lunch just above it. The waterfall was impressive as it was cascading down the mountain. Then it was on to the summit of The Calf which had 360 degrees views. Fortunately the weather forecast was wrong again. We had a dry morning and late afternoon sun with a slight breeze. We met about six large groups of school children who were climbing up to Winder Fell. It is a tradition that all newbies do the ascent when they first join the school. We had refreshments at the Black Bull Hotel where there was plenty of banter and laughter. Jean and I would like to thank everyone who joined us.

Hayton to Brampton Station walk

Catching the 685 bus we had a short journey to Hayton junction and then the overcast sky turned to light rain. Fortunately it didn't turn heavy as we headed into Townhead Wood allowing us make good time. In no time we were over the railway and down towards Greenwell picking brambles on the way. Taking the riverside path we headed towards then into Gelt Woods stopping only for our lunch break. Not hanging around as the rain was still persistent we walked through Unity and on towards Brampton Station. We're now on the old Dandy railway trail which takes us under the A69 and our way into Brampton. It's downhill all the way to first Steven Wilson's the butchers, and then Cranston's where we eventually caught our bus home. Once in the city we made for Tullie Cafe, our watering hole.
