Newton Rigg & Newton Reigny walk

After meeting everyone at Penrith bus station, we headed out of town along Thacka Lane. Passing under the motorway we then crossed several fields before reaching Newton Rigg. According to the forecast there was a lot of rain coming our way. Everyone knew it so we made good progress. Back on tarmac we headed into Newton Reigny and onto the path alongside the telephone box. The ground underfoot was great for walking as we made over to our lunch stop at Pallet Hill Farm. We took a vote and all smiles at the venue. Not wanting to hang around too long as we were pushing our luck with the weather, we headed down towards Moss Rigg. The long bridleway which skirted the old railway line and Newbiggin was our route back to Penrith. More tarmac, a rolling field and a railway bridge got us into the town and eager for refreshments. The Daffodil café was very welcoming and the company just ace. Thanks to Ken and everyone else. Until the next time. Dave

Parton to Whitehaven

It was dry when we left the train by the giant step at Parton and we were all congratulating ourselves on the fine weather. However before we had even left the town the rain had started, and it never stopped, getting gradually heavier as we approached Whitehaven. But it wasn't cold and there was no wind. We stopped and waved at a goods trainand got a toot back which made us laugh. After a very nice lunch at the Howling Wolf Bakery, the speedier five rushed off for the train while I waited for the others. We just missed the train unfortunately but took the chance for a nice rest in the warmth of the station waiting room. Sharron

B Walk

Glencoyne Head and Aira force and litter pick

Leader: Christine Milton

After a chilly start collecting several sacks of rubbish around our meeting point in Carlisle we headed off to Glencoyne for the start of our Lake District hike where we were also rewarded by the National Trust with our Countryside Champion badges 😊 Many thanks to the member who came along to litter pick even though he couldn’t make the walk today. The weather was superb and we were rewarded with fine views all day. Several stops were taken to enjoy the amazing scenery into the Glencoyne Valley and over Lake Ullswater. Both A & B walks reached Aira Force at the same time and it was good to enjoy refreshments together before returning along the Ullswater Way to the cars at Glencoyne. Thanks to everyone who came along and made it a most enjoyable day.

Thanks Christine

Askham Fell and Lowther Valley

Leader: Roger Eaves

Seventeen of us braved the high winds on Askham Fell for our drinks break and although we were surrounded in gloomy clouds no rain dropped on us. It was a lot calmer down in Lowther valley and we enjoyed the refreshments in the Castle tea rooms. Thanks to all for coming along. Roger.

Ribblehead

Eight members enjoyed a blustery showery day in the middle of the Yorkshire three peaks. Catching the 10:58 Carlisle - Settle train to Ribblehead, we then went underneath the impressive viaduct and did a clockwise circuit to the west, on tracks, minor roads and paths, sometimes with good views of Ingleborough, Whernside and the viaduct, through Gummerfleet, Broadrake and Winterscales. Fortunately we were invited to have our lunch break in a barn while the worst of the showers hammered on the roof. We finished with refreshments in the Station Inn.

Eleven of us including Bella, the well fed doggie, ventured out on a fine day. We had two first time A walkers, Barbara and Christine, who did really well and seemed to enjoy it. The only slight downside, was when we finally reached the top, it became overcast. However, by the time we'd finished lunch, it had cleared up again. We had refreshments in Honister slate mine shop.
Thanks to everybody who came along and I hope you all enjoyed it. (Slight mishap where I slipped and bruised and cut my hand! Idgit!!!)

Annan River

Unfortunately there were just two people on this walk, myself and Christine. We did consider sloping off for coffee instead but decided a walk was probably better for us.

Leaving the station we walked through town and crossed the bridge out of the town to the steps down to the river. It was a fine day and we were enjoying chatting when we were joined by a third walker who very politely came to walk between us. She wasn't much of a talker but seemed to enjoy our company, which wasn't really a problem until she got an itchy ear and tried to scratch it on Christine's arm. Christine flew off the path just managing to keep her footing, while, I'm ashamed to say, I laughed. We lost our companion at the next gate, she didn't seem bothered, just got her head down and contined eating the grass. Meanwhile we continued to follow the river for a couple of miles before turning off through the woods. We took a lunch break in the cemetery before continuing down Violet Hill and into town for refreshments.

Deer Rut Walk, Martindale and Brock Crags

Leader: Pete Rutland

We managed to park at the valley head which was a good start. A steady climb up toward Bedafell Knott and then onto Angle Tarn for mid morning coffee. It was then around the far side of the tarn to Brock Crags. We retraced our steps to the tarn for lunch. We headed down via the route under Heck Crag navigating the tricky path to the valley floor. The pics don’t show it but the viz was pretty poor today with constant mizzle. It made deer spotting difficult but we were very lucky to have a couple of close encounters of the deer kind at a couple of spots. Thanks to gang for coming out, great to see David again and Suzy on her second outing with the club. Tea and cakes at the Howtown Hotel.
