Great walk today from Lazonby, visiting Lacey’s Caves and Long Meg and her Daughters stone circle as well as Addingham church, with its collection of mediaeval crosses and graves.

Just about 8 miles and mistly dry.

Lanercost to Brampton

Leader: Judy Cherrie

Photos: Christine Wood and Cynthia

Six members met at the Market Hall to catch the HW1 Reay bus to The Roman Army Museum. Today, however, we only went as far as Lanercost.    From the Abbey Bridge we made our way up Quarry Beck, pausing just before Easby for a sit on some logs to take a banana break. We then crossed  the road to Easby, turning left over up and along The Ridge, pausing to take in the spectacular views towards Spadeadam,  Christianbury Craggs, Walton Church, Burns Wark and lots of windmills. We were blessed with a perfect day. A section of mud, a beautiful waterfall, masses of bluebells, beautiful shades of green, bird songs, no rain, no wind and sunshine. At Brampton we went directly to The Howard Arms for their usual good service and wide range of choice of refreshment choices.   Thank you all for a good day.

Walk Brackenrigg to Glenridding. 9 Miles ( a bit longer for the leader!)

After the initial confusion about where the walk was starting from, sixteen walkers enjoyed a great walk along the Ullswater Way, taking the high level route over Gowbarrow Fell. The weather stayed fair throughout with just a few light showers. We made the top of Gowbarrow in good time and enjoyed good views over the lake and surrounding fells. The 'Fix the Fells' team have made some great improvements to the paths, though the descent to Aira Force is still tricky in places. We made our way past a herd of friendly “belties” to join the tourist paths down to the falls, somewhat diminished with the recent dry spell but still impressive. We enjoyed the final two or three flat miles into Glenridding in warmish sunshine.

Thanks to everyone who came along.

A Walk

Helvellyn via Striding Edge and descending via Swirrel Edge

Leader: Bruce McMillan

Photos: a selection from Astrid Carss, Linda Scott, Bruce McMillan, Angie-Jane, Malcolm Iredale, Gill A and Christine Milton

Good turn out on the coach today considering the weather forecast. Sixteen hardy souls joined me for the Helvellyn and the edges walk, good considering we wouldn't know until the 'hole in the wall', whether we would actually be doing the round! However, apart from a tiny spatter at the start, the rain stayed off until about three minutes from the coach! An enjoyable walk and everybody survived, no slips or falls and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Thanks to all for joining my walk. ⛰️🧗B

A Walk: Grisedale and Hopegill Head

Leader: Pete Rutland

Today’s walk report. … A good turnout on both walks today. In Braithwaite we got a bit caught up with the 1000s of cyclists but got ourselves on route up Grisedale Pike. Glorious weather with glorious views across to the Isle of Man, Scotland and many of the Lakeland Hills. Lunch on the summit in the sunshine before heading over to Hopegill Head then down over Sand Hill and down through the mines. Just about made the cafe in Braithwaite for a well earned cup of tea. Amazon Christine and Jungle Jean filled us in on their amazing trip and we are all looking forward to the Social night presentation done in full Inca dress. A great day, thanks to everyone for coming out.

Pete.

Bluebell walk at Langholm

Leader: Nancy McLure.

Photos:

Twenty one walkers joined me for a gentle walk round the bluebell woods near Langholm. The weather was perfect and the bluebells did not disappoint. Our lunch stop was at the Becks Burn where there was plenty of seating due to the low level of water. Marsh marigolds, primroses and violets added colour and a cuckoo was heard in the distance. The track took us past the many stages of pheasant rearing before the stunning last bluebell woods. The seventh and last bridge of the day was the Jubilee Bridge over the Esk and we finished off with refreshments at the Buccleuch Centre. Thanks to Alison and Ming for back marking and thanks to all for their excellent company.

Kind regards
Nancy

Ribblehead

4 miles, grade 4

Leader: Geoff Entwistle

Six members caught the 10:58 Carlisle-Settle train to Ribblehead station. Going underneath the impressive viaduct we then did a clockwise circuit on minor roads, track sand paths to the west, through Gummerfleet, Broadrake and Winterscales with good views of Ingleborough,Whernside and the viaduct. We finished with refreshments in the Station Inn.

A walk

High Street, Thornthwaite Crag and Mardale Ill Bell via Rough Crag.

Leader: Astrid Carss

Photos: Astrid Carss and Brenden

The weather forecast today was grim, but it turned out to be not as bad as predicted. Eight of us headed up the scrambles over Rough Crag, from Mardale Head. Even though a bit damp underfoot the scrambling was easy and fun. After multiple false summits we made it to top, losing the views the higher we got. The chilly wind got up around High Street.

We hid behind Thorthwaites large trig pillar to have lunch.

On the way to Mardale Ill Bell the fog closed in, I went slightly off course but quickly got my bearings back. After our third Wainwright, we made our way down Nan Bield steeply, with Small Water and Haweswater coming back into view. Now out of the chilly wind, it was a lovely walk down past the waterfalls and back to the cars.

We had a nice drink at the Haweswater Hotel before home. Thanks all for the good company and laughs. And the rare lift in the Merc, Mark
