Petteril river walk

Leader: Sharron Murray

Photos: Christine Wood and Sharron Murray

Despite the coolish wind we soon got warm when we started walking. Three of us came on the bus from town, including new walker Cynthia, and we were met by another five when we arrived at Aldi. We walked down Petteril Bank Road to the river bridge where we joined the public footpath by the river. This was when we had our first casualty, as Alfie the dog launched himself into the water. His jumper will never be the same again, it had to be taken off and wrung out as he was drooping all over wearing it. There were several stiles on this walk so a couple of members who couldn't manage them (or so they say...), sloped off for coffee, leaving six. We had a grand walk, with the stiles and Madge giving us plenty of laughs, culminating in a chorus of 'Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini' in a field at Carlton. I pretended not to know them.

Thanks to everyone that came, it was a good outing! Sharron

B Walk

Leader: Pete Rutland

Perfect walking weather today, not too hot but dry and sunny with great visibility. A good crowd gathered at the start and we were soon up on the top of Ling Fell munching bananas. We then headed back down to the start point at Brumston Bridge to take on the longer part of the walk up Sale Fell. Lunch was taken on the summit where we enjoyed some great views all around, some of the higher tops had a covering of snow. Just to keep the Birkett baggers happy we headed over to Lothwaite Fell, (we were going there anyway), I think it's one and worth the visit for the view over Bass Lake. It was then down to the path that skirts around the foot of Sale Fell via the old church ruins where we had a shot of ginger wine before heading back by Kelswick. Amazing that we have so many members with false body parts such as knees and hips that still get out and enjoy our amazing hills, well done to you all. Mandy a relatively new member is becoming machine-like in a short space of time and I feel sure will soon be taking up fell running, a pleasure to have her in the group. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it worth while.

A Walk

Angle Tarn, Hayeswater and The Knott

Leader: Bruce McMillan

Photos: Astrid Carss and Bruce McMillan

We started out from Cow Bridge with sunny skies and reasonably warm weather During the good days workout, we made good time and arrived at Angle Tarn Pikes in good time. We decided to go down to the Tarn for lunch as the wind was quite cold. We then ascended the Knott ready for the rest of the walk- downhill. We crossed the beck at Hayeswater head, without  mishap, only to discover a new replacement bridge about 150 yards down.

Disappointing turnout on the day but thanks to those who did come along. Great company, a great workout and DRY!!

Etterby and bypass litter pick

Grade 4,  6 miles

Leader: David Elsworth

On a glorious morning 19 members gathered at the Sands, so we headed off towards the Cricket Club with pickers in one hand and bags in the other. Splitting into two we moved onwards up the Scar and kept picking along the way before heading into Etterby village. At the junction we arranged a pickup had a goodie or two then again split into two groups with one going through the farm and the other up to the Cargo intersection. After meeting up at the footpath we had a well earned lunch and even time to take in some rays. Refreshments over it was onwards to the bridge and yet again we needed another pickup of rubbish. Getting near the end of the litter pick it was decided that some would walk the wall path along the river back to the city, the rest of the group litter picked up towards Moorhouse road and the bus ride back into town. Coffee and buns in Tullie café with plenty of smiles.....thanks again everyone for making it so easy for me.....till the next time

Well that was wet! The forecast was accurate and people turned up! We made it up Selside Pike but dropped down to Nab Crag from there. A shorter than planned walk all done in good spirits.

Walk B

Lords Seat and Barf

Leader: Pete Rutland

Photos: A selection from Mandy Gilpin, Gill A and Pete Rutland

A sheltered walk up through the forestry before heading out into the wind on the top of Lords Seat. We didn’t hang about there, the plan being to head over to Broom Fell. On the exposed open ridge it quickly became apparent that the wind was really getting up. A quick change of plan saw us taking the path over toward Barf.  The shelter we got from being on the other side of Lords Seat from the wind made things much easier and we had an easy hike over to the summit of Barf. Cloudy but great views off Barf and lunch just off the top. Back towards Lords Seat and into the shelter of the forest and back to the Whinlatter Centre. A good challenge with the conditions we encountered. The wind causing us most of the problems and contrary to some opinions I thought it was relatively dry 🌂. Anyway, good company and all in all a reasonable hike followed by tea in the cafe at the Centre. Thanks to everyone who came out to face the elements.
