Place Fell

Leader: Bruce McMillan

Eight of us started off from Patterdale CC parking near Grisedale Bridge. We went over the river bridge to Side Farm and continued upwards to Boredale House, a ruined chapel. We turned 90 degrees to follow the ridge up to the summit of Place Fell. We went down slightly from the top to get out of the wind for an early lunch. All except one  - in shorts!!  -,had wet weather gear on as the Wx forecast was beginning to come true, increasing rain and wind.

We followed the long up and down ridge where at the end, we joined the lakeside track. This, who anyone who has done it, is long and up and down, up and down! Midway along we all dispensed with the wet Wx gear, as the sun was shining and blue sky. We stopped at a viewpoint of the lake on a level stone place and had coffee, water and snacks. We continued back to Side Farm and at the river, went alongside on a path up to the next bridge, a pleasant little detour. We continued to the Patterdale Hotel where refreshments were had.

Thank you to all who joined for the pleasant walk. Bruce 🧑‍🦯🧗

Garlands

Leader: Joan Benson

Eight of us, including Mandy, a new member, descended on Joan and Stan's after we had been invited to partake of coffee and cakes at their beautiful home before joining Joan on a walk around the district. Garlands is a very green district and we enjoyed walking past the former nurses home and now converted older buildings before walking through the woods and down to Crighton Rugby Club where we were lucky to see purple Marsh Orchids growing amongst the buttercups. From there we skirted the cricket club to join a footpath towards the motorway. It was flanked by trees on either side, so much so that when the trees ended it was a surprise to see a housing development. We turned to walk through a wild flower meadow to before going into the Carleton Clinic for lunch. A good walk with nice company.

Wednesday 4th June

Hayton circular

With sun trying to break through the clouds 21of us negotiated the busy A69 and headed over the fields to Hayton. The gods were with us as we were blessed with intermittent rays of welcome sun, then it was onward towards Townhead and into the wonderful expanse of woodland. At the end of the track, it was a short walk on tarmac then over the railway bridge where we had our banana break, it was down again on tarmac to the pretty hamlet of Greenwell. Right through the hamlet and along a twisting track took us to the outskirts of Castle Carrock, a bit muddy but still smiling ....I think. Turning here we headed onwards over fields, it was quite a therapeutic sight watching the barley bathed in sunshine and blown by the breeze.

Lunch was just off the tarmac before our next group of fields but it was getting a bit blowy by now.... fingers crossed and we were still dry. Off we went again and making good time mainly through gates and the odd stile we reached another wood near Cowran where our luck ran out with the weather, short stop and a quick change saved the day. We now were heading to Hardbanks and the railway crossing but it was pleasant walking so didn't take long to get to How Mill. From here it's tarmac to the T junction then past the glamping pods and into the back of Hayton. Through the fields as we had started the walk and up the A69 just as the weather was closing in, we were on a home run with the cars insight. Job done as we enjoyed the fruits of our labours in the farm shop.....many thanks to everyone, you made it a pleasure to lead you all.....Dave

C Walk Clapham to Austwick

5 miles. Grade 4

Leader: Sharron Murray

There were only five of us on this lovely walk around the Yorkshire Dales but plenty of highlights along the way, including the fabulous views and watching swallows feed their young on the wing when we had a banana break. We had reached Austwick by lunch and sat in  the bus shelter for our meal. Luckily the parish church just opposite had a toilet so we were all refreshed for the return journey across the mediaeval field systems. We got back to the coach just as the rain started, so it was a quick change and off to the New Inn for some liquid refreshment. Thank you for your company, a lovely walk.

Great day today walking up the valley of High Cup Gill and then directly up the front of the Nick, Cumbria’s Grand Canyon. Rounding off the walk on the top of Murton Pike. Delicious cakes and drinks at the Old Post Box Pantry, Dufton.

Newlands Valley

Leader: Judith Mingins

Thank you everyone who came on the walk today. The weather was perfect and so was the company. It was lovely to have a slightly longer lunch break to take in the magnificent views sitting beside the dam. No one was brave enough to have a dip in the reservoir. It was rather chilly. Thanks again to Ken as back marker.

Judith.
