A walk

Catsycam and Birkhouse Moor

Leader: Pete Rutland

Sixteen of us left the car park at Glenridding, so a good number for a cold and cloudy day. As promised there was no rain on my walks though the viz was some what interrupted on the high fell of Catstycam by thick cloud. Still a reasonable bit of snow about but nothing that required the use of grippers. It was a long slog up to the hole in the wall where as anticipated we had lunch. We did pass the tarn on way to Catstycam but it was never visible.
It was then down and over to Birkhouse Moor before heading back down to Glenridding in daylight. 😜Thanks to all pitched up, the conditions were tough at times but worth it for the views.😅.

B walk

Dufton Fell

Leader: Roger Tringham

Seven of us drove to Dufton including a potential new member and met an eighth there.

We left behind calm, dry and dull weather in Carlisle, but in Dufton it was brighter and dry but the Helm wind was blowing strongly. We set off on a good track which became very muddy in places and contoured clockwise around the base of Dufton fell. We had intended to climb and traverse the top of the fell from the far side but when we reached the start of the path to the summit, It became clear that it would be very unpleasant and  dangerous on the top so we stayed low and continued around the bottom of the fell. After a few hundred yards the sun appeared and the wind dropped so lunch was taken. Continuing after lunch, the wind reappeared as strong as ever and we walked on good paths to Dufton and the cars. Tea and cake at The Pot Place concluded the afternoon. Thanks to all for coming along.

Wreay Woods

Leader: Judy Cherrie

The 104 Penrith bus left spot on time at 10.06 from the bus station. My apologies to new member Pam for being a tad out on our arrival time at the carpark. Five of us set off towards Wreay village - soon climbing our one STILE. My sharp-eyed colleagues spotted my “deliberate” spelling mistake in my walk description and gave me 100 lines to write ✍️. Boo Hoo😢😢 An interesting time spent at Wreay village. The wind was cold so we didn’t linger over lunch and retraced our steps. The one STILE turned out to be 4. Hey Ho. Skipped tea at The Premier Inn in favour of catching the bus back to town with 3 minutes to spare.

Calebreck Walk

Leader: David Elsworth

After a hiccup at the Sands where we had to leave 3 behind due to car shortage we set off to Calebreck on a grey overcast morning.14 gathered at the cattle grid and we set off over the fields and becks heading for Nether Row, after a short break through the farm we carried on to Fellside. We kept lunch short as the cloud was dropping and  sleet was threatening as we walked up into the mist. We headed along the track passing the mine spoils of Sandbed then dropped out of the clouds and back to the cars at Calebreck, not much to see but plenty of smiles. Coffee was very enjoyable in the new Muddy Duck cafe

A walk: Great Gable

Leader: Brendan Carss

Photos: Astrid & Brendan Carss

12 of us set off for a cold and windy walk up to Great Gable. We had to take our time heading up and down the scramble but it wasn’t too bad with micro spikes. There were good views of Buttermere and the surrounding area as we came down.

Annan

Leader: Sharron Murray

From the train station ten of us set off towards Annan Hill on a nice day. Good views across the Solway from the top before we dropped down and joined a causewayed track to Waterfoot and the memorial to Robbie Burns. We stopped for a banana break there before turning and walking back over the merse to Annan where the party divided. Half of us opted for coffee and cake, while others sneaked off to the chippy. A good walk. Thanks to all for attending.

Patterdale

Leader: Bruce MacMillan

12 of us turned up for the walk, which, considering the weather, was great. We started off from Glenridding towards Patterdale, turning right at Grisedale Bridge. The first half of the walk, was , initially, along a road which eventually, became a track. The weather was not brilliant and we got a bit wet and it was cold. However, on reaching Ruthwaite climbing hut (unfortunately but understandably closed) the rain held off for our lunch.

We started the return on the North side of the river with the weather staying behind us. On reaching Lanty'sTarn, we discovered that, since the Catstye walk of 2 weeks ago, the loggers had been and there were less trees since then!

Thank you to all who came out on the walk. Considering the weather, we all seemed to enjoy it
