Geltsdale and Tindale Tarn
Leader: Diane Moore
Photos: Pete Rutland, Mandy Gilpin, David Elsworth & Mike Coates
Ten of us set off on the last walk of 2025 around Geltsdale and Tindale tarn. It was a chilly overcast day but at least it managed to remain dry. Very quiet from a wildlife point of view, although plenty of birds on the feeders at the RSPB centre. We had a welcome warm lunch stop inside the information centre with the heating on! We continued on via the Forest head trail with the old quarry workings and lime kiln and made our way back to the car park along the old railway. A short walk in good company and we welcomed a new member, Gill. We finished the day at Champa's who very kindly provided us with abundant refreshments and enjoyed sitting in front of her lovely log burner!
Thanks to all who came along and a special thanks to Champa for her hospitality. I wish you all a very Happy New Year.

Carlisle Cemetery

A good turn out for this short walk exploring Carlisle Cemetery. The weather was cold but dry although the promised sunshine barely showed, we had a nice day for a walk. We explored the old and the new and looked at notable memorials and trees. Plenty of wildlife was out and about from birds to squirrels. A heron flew overhead giving us a great show and we saw deer grazing. Thank you to all who joined me.

Bowscale Fell

Final Sunday walk for 2025 with 26 post-Christmas walkers enjoying a short but at times challenging walk to the summit of Bowscale Fell (2300ft)
After an icy road walk we reached the delightful, secluded Bowscale Tarn for a welcome coffee break The group divided into two parties one tackling the steep direct route onto the fell ridge and the other taking a slightly easier line. It was gusty on the fell top with a well below zero wind chill and we made the most of the little shelter available on the summit before opting to descend. It was sunny and pleasant in the valley bottom but we faced a final challenge attempting to cross an iced over slabbed section of path with most opting for the bog!
A great end to a great years walking
Here’s to 2026 and the club’s 80th birthday year.

A Walk
Cawdale round

The usually empty parking area was very busy when we arrived as they were hounding trailing. Fortunately we didn’t get in their way! The fell ponies had also kept their distance. Although a little wet underfoot and a bit misty on the tops but we managed to find a spot for a quick lunch stop. As we dropped out of the mist the sun lit up parts of the Pennines. The walk gave a different perspective to the usual routes onto High Street.
Thanks to all those who joined me.

Arthurs Pike
Leader: Pete Rutland

Setting off from Roehead we took the Barton Fell route up to Arthurs Pike. This gave us some moody but clear views down Ullswater. Prior to getting onto the summit we settled for an early lunch taking shelter from the chilly wind in some grassy hummocks. As we had lunch a bit of clag came in. A brief stop on the top before heading down. As we did the clag cleared giving us some more nice views. Having made good time we decided to add on Heughscar Hill. The wild horses were very friendly and always great to see. Very clear on the top, then back down to the cars. Pooley Bridge Book Cafe for some tea and lovely cakes to round off a good day. Thanks to the guys for coming out and a Merry Christmas to All.
Regards Pete

Parton to Whitehaven
Leader: Sharron Murray

I was worried I'd be the only one taking this walk but I was pleasantly surprised to be joined by four members for this short but scenic walk. We took the train to Parton, then walked through the small village to join the King Charles III Coastal Path, unfortunately we were walking straight into the sun, so we had to turn around to see the views (well worth it), almost until we came to Whitehaven. After a comfort break in Tesco we crossed onto the harbour. We had to wait for a fishing boat coming in through the sea lock before we could cross the swing bridge over it and walk around, past the old look out to the Beacon where we had some refreshments. Then back to the station for the train home. A lovely stroll in good company.

Christmas Tea Walk
Leader: Graham Bell
Photos & Report: Pete Rutland
The annual tea walk organised by Graham Bell and supported by Sarah from Low Bridge End Farm, who provides a brilliant after walk tea, took place today. Because of the weather it was decided to combine the two proposed walks. We all gathered at the old railway station in Keswick and set off down the railway walk. We took the track that takes you to the road past the Keswick Climbing Wall and onto Castle Rigg Stone Circle. A brief lunch was taken here before heading back into Keswick. The walk was only about 4 miles and much shortened so it's hoped everyone was satisfied.
That done it was off to Bridge End Farm for the main event which was a sumptuous tea provided by Sarah. Graham has organised this event for somewhere in the region of 15 years. No one is really sure but it is believed it could have been going for as long as 30 years. What is for sure, is that Sarah informed us that this tea has helped raise £7000 for the Hospice over the years. A great effort by Sarah who was presented with a Certificate for Honorary Life Membership of the Club in recognition of her support to the Club over many years. I think it is the dedication of people like Graham along with the support of people like Sarah that make our Club very special. Not to mention the members who pitch up every year and happily put their hands in their pockets. Well done to all and hope to see you next year. Sarah's ambition is to get to £10,000, so if you couldn’t make it this year, be there or be square next year.
Pete on behalf of Graham.

The not so famous five ventured up Place Fell on a wet and windy day. Not so bad doing the hard bit up the Fell but got worse as the day went on. Still had good views of the fells and Ullswater.
Thanks to all who braved the weather

Soup Walk
Leader: Judy Cherrie

As we all know, the rain keeps on coming. Which meant that we had to take the Tarmac route for the Soup Walk from The Sands to Cherrie Mansion. Twenty or so of us met at the Sands. Some parked at mine & walked in. Thankyou all for turning up. Thanks also to Chris Fortune who helped in leading and in the Galley. And a big thanks to you all for your generous support of the Hospice. Between us we raised £277.

Carlisle to Upperby via the Cumbria Way
Leader: Sharron Murray
Photos: Sharron Murray
Four of us set off from the train station on a lovely autumn morning for this walk. We cross the Victoria Viaduct and Nelson Bridge to the steps down to the Cumbria Way. The weir on the Caldew was magnificent with very high water coming over. We were lucky to see a heron, an egret, a black headed gull and a crow all fishing on the edge of the flow. We took the paved path rather than the riverside path through the commons, due to the flooding of the lower lying land. The pyracanthas we saw was covered in berries, looking very festive. Once we arrived on Lowry Street we were met by another member who joined us as far as Hammonds Pond. We finished our walk at Madge's who very kindly made us a cuppa.
