Sunday 3rd August

A walk: The Nab, Rest Dodd, Angletarn Pikes

Leaders: Mark and Jean

10 of us set off this morning to complete Astrid's 214th Wainwright- The Nab. For the first hour we had light rain, so waterproof jackets were needed. After that the light breeze pushed away the moody clouds as we were approaching Rest Dodd and sun came out for the rest of the day. Finally we reached The Nab and did the guard of honour for Astrid (mother) so congratulations  for achieving it in just under 2 years unlike my 35 years. Lol. Then it was on to Angletarn were we took lunch. Then on to Angletarn pikes for our last Wainwrights of the day. Then it was on to Boredale Hause where we picked  up the path to take us back to Hartsop. Christine and Jean thought it was their  birthday as they saw a naked man appear from nowhere. Lol. We were also lucky  to see a couple of herds of deer from a distance. Like to thank everyone who joined us today....Mark and Jean

Steel Knots B walk

Leader: Pete Rutland

Photos: Pete Rutland

It looked like a pretty miserable day was in store for us heading down the M6, and I wasn’t surprised at the very low turn out considering the forecast. Roger and Mandy met us at Hallin Fell which doubled the numbers to 4. As it turned out the day was very good and at times even like summer. From the summit of Steel Knotts there were some great views. Looking over toward the Nab and Rest Dodd we could see they were nice and clear which was a good omen for Astrids last Wainwright on the A walk. Lunch was had in the old ruin at the head of the valley before heading down Fusedale. Hitting the foot bridge that crosses the beck we looked up and wondered at the meaning of Pikeawassa, the summit of Steel Knotts. Apparently its a bit vague but probably Norse like a lot of names in the Lakes. Awassa possibly meaning watercourse. I think this was the first hill walk in a long time for Mandy so brilliant to see her giving it a go and hope we see you again. It did turn a very good day with after walk refreshments in the Cafe at Howtown Hotel. Thanks for coming out.

Pete

Feedback for Sunday 3rd August B walk...

I am a new member to this group having recently moved back to Cumbria. I used to be a frequent fell walker but had  a serious illness and a four months spell in hospital seven years ago. I then had a period of  learning to walk again, swim, drive etc. Last Sunday was my first fell walk in eight years- and it was amazing! Pete and Joan (and Roger) were extremely supportive and kind and celebrated this milestone event with me .Thank you.

A Walk

Great Crag and Grange Fell from Rosthwaite

Leader: Astrid Carss

Photos: Astrid Carss & Ann MacIntosh

13 of us headed out into lovely summer weather, and gorgeous views. A bit of a steep, stepped pull up to Lingy Fell and towards Dock Tarn. There were some boggy bits along the way and a few swarms of flies to bother us. We had lovely views when we stopped to rest though. Robin fed the tame ducks  at Watendlath Tarn. Another steep and scrambly route took us up towards Grange Fell. A bit overgrown in places, we decided was due to the lack of sheep

around there. A few in the group had a bit of a scramble up Blund Fell and Joppety How tops. Then, after a spell taking in the views, we made our way back down the valley back towards Rosthwaite. Most of us went for a cool drink at the Royal Oak, although Robin and Mark didn’t get their much anticipated cider and had to settle for beer/ larger. The tea room was a bit of a let down for the ladies but they managed some ice cream. The traffic jam back through Keswick was a bit of a nightmare but what can you do. Thank you all for coming along. We had a laugh and good craic.        Astrid

B Walk

Hallin Fell via Ullswater Steamer

Leader: Christine Milton

Photos: Christine Milton & Mike Coates

11 of us left Carlisle to be joined on Pooley Bridge landing stage by 3 more members and Snowy, a very fit four legged friend. Fortunately the crossing to Howtown was much calmer than the previous day when the steamer had been cancelled due to high winds. The climb was made to the summit of Hallin Fell with a few breaks to “admire the view and be sociable with other walkers !!” The view from the top did not disappoint & lunch was taken here. Time to move on, though a few were a little reluctant to leave this spot haha. Glorious weather and views all the way back to Pooley Bridge with a welcome stop for ice creams at the campsite made it feel like being on holiday ... just leaving room for tea and cake at Granny Dowbekins before heading for home. Many thanks to everyone for all the fun, fabulous company one and all.

Brampton Old Church and circular

Leader: Graham Bell

Photos: Sharron Murray

Leaving the bus on the corner of Main Street, the six of us walked around the corner to take a ginnel along a stream at the back of the houses which brought us out on the lane to the old church. We had a coffee break in the modern cemetery before meandering the rest of the way to the church. Judy popped into the farm to pick up the key. We discovered the church, that dates from as early as the 11th century, was built upon a Roman fort. When we left we took a stile into field at the back of the farm and through several others before joining another quiet lane. After crossing the road we found shade under a huge oak tree for lunch. When we couldn't put it off any longer, it was back out in to the sunshine towards Breconhill plantation, unfortunately private so no shade there and back to Brampton. The walk was cut short due to the heat and humidity so came in at 4 miles

Wednesday Walk 13th August

Coanwood and Lambley viaduct.

Leader: Ian Rowley.

13 walkers for a walk on the 13th(?!?) walking around Coanwood, Lambley and the village of Eals. Sections of the route through woodland provided welcome shade and respite from the heatwave. Sadly the viaduct is out of bounds at the moment but still an enjoyable ramble rounded off with refreshments at the brilliant Hallbankgate Hub community cafe.

Falkirk Wheel and The Kelpies

Leader: Ros West

Photos: Sharron Murray

Just four of us went on this lovely trip out with Irvine's Coaches but what a splendid day we had. We rode the Falkirk Wheel on a canal barge, rising 25 metres in the air using Archimedes' Principle, then back on the coach for a visit to the magnificent Kelpies. Amazing. Then a walk along the canal to end the day. Home by 7pm for a well earned cuppa, or in Ros' case a glass of wine.

Watendlath via Dock tarn

Leader David Bulman

Enjoyed in perfect walking conditions, 8 members fully appreciated the extensive views we had all day, once we broke out of the tree line on Lingy End. With a coffee break after Dock Tarn amusingly watched over by a ewe and her lamb who were only a few metres off we continued to Watendlath and Lunch. Following the leisurely walk back we had our reward with refreshments taken in the garden of the Langstrath Inn. Many thanks to all who came along and for the good craic as usual. Well done to Mandy who continues to get back to walking. David.

Walk A. Sunday 24th August 2025

Pavey Arc via Jacks rake.

Leader Brenden Carss

Photos Astrid and Brenden

A brave few turned up to tackle Pavey Arc via Jacks / Jake's rake! Beautiful warm sunny day in the lakes, busy with tourists due to the bank holiday weekend. Barely any wind made the long slog up steps to stickle tarn tough and hot. We had a banana break at stickle tarn with a daunting view of the climb ahead. There was some initial scree, then we all slowly made our way up the gully, using hands, feet and knees, through tight squeezes and tough pull-ups. We worked as a team and all got to the top together safe and sound. We had lunch at the top, with a view of paragliders. We went a more sensible way down. Some of us did some bird watching back at the tarn! Then we made our way down what felt like a million steps to the pub and well deserved drinks.

Thankyou for coming along.

Brenden.

Haltwhistle

Leader: Sharron Murray

Photos: Sharron Murray

Geoff, Ros, Sue, Jill, Christine and I took the train from Carlisle and we were met by Hazel at the station in Haltwhistle. We took a leisurely stroll on the South Tyne way after we'd braved crossing the A69, coming back past the wonderful but unfortunately private Bellister Castle. We went under the road on the way back, much better for the nerves, and the train was due just as we arrived back at the station. A nice walk with pleasant company.

Silloth- Grune Point

Leader Elizabeth Alnutt

Photos by Mike Coates

The tide was right out when we started off along the promenade towards Skinburness. We followed new signage for the English Coastal Path, then up the track to the WWII gun emplacement at the end of Grune Point where we had our sandwiches. The weather can be rough here, with wind and rain, but we were lucky enough to get only slightly damp in some showers on the return path to Silloth. The tide was in and it was good to see and hear the waves. Silloth is a special place for Carliols and even those who aren't Carliols seem to like it! Thanks to Ken for back marking and to all the 26 who came and made it a good day.
Many thanks
Elizabeth

Walk A

Pike O' Blisco

Leader David Bulman

Driving down through showers things initially didn't look good weather wise but in Gt Langdale we set off in clear and breezy conditions . When we got to the Hause above Red Tarn the wind was very strong and a shower was blowing through so rather than having a breather we decided to press on to gain the top and then find a spot for lunch out of the wind among the rock formations, which we duly did and by then the weather had cleared. The three short rock down-climbs on descending the summit, although a bit "tricky" were safely negotiated by everyone and then followed the long walk down the stepped path to the road and finally refreshments in the pub gardens. A brilliant day out - many thanks to everyone who attended. David.
